I received a GPP Travel Grant in 2001 to
continue establishing educational and research exchanges with colleagues
at Maseno University in Western Kenya. Unfortunately circumstances arose
that made it impossible for me to carry out my trip. However, with the
very helpful collaboration of the GLCA staff, especially Jo Ellen Parker,
I was able to use this money to bring Dr. Monica Ayieko, a Maseno professor
of consumer and household economics, to Antioch College as a visiting
professor. Dr. Ayieko spent a very full month at Antioch. Her activities
included: visiting and guest lecturing in classes; giving a formal public
presentation on her research; meeting with various departments, faculty,
and students; conducting library research; engaging in planning meetings
with Antioch faculty and administration to draft a Memorandum of Agreement
concerning future educational and faculty exchanges; taking part in the
April 2002 GPP Workshop at Denison University; and visiting other colleges
in the area, notably Kenyon where she gave additional talks and lectures.
Dr. Ayieko's time with us was truly beneficial and helped to build the
type of partnerships GPP aims to cultivate by allowing travel and visits
to go in both directions. I am very grateful for GLCA's assistance in
making this happen. Through the contacts made during her visit, Dr. Ayieko
was also able to take part in the GPP Summer Seminar in Mombasa. She is
currently continuing to work with Maseno and Antioch faculty and administrators
to finalize the exchange agreement. Exchanges may begin as early as this
coming summer, pending the outcome of the search for additional funding.
