Resources
Library
has endowment from Arthur Vining Davis Foundation of approximately $400,000
In addition, the library subscribes to extensive online resources including,
for example, Project Muse (which provides campus access to the journal
Positions: East Asia Cultures Critique and others) and Academic Search
Premier (which gives us access to journals such as Studies in Central
and East Asian Religions; Southeast Asian Affairs; and Contemporary
Southeast Asia). The library also subscribes to specialized databases
such as CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online, which includes
working papers, journals, books, and policy briefs as well as country
data and maps. Special Collections has a modest collection of titles
that supports East Asian studies. Searching "Asia?, China, Chinese,
and Japan?" reveals approximately 75 titles that are relevant to these
areas. Approximately half were published before 1900. Among the works
are geographies, children and adult books related to travel and description
in China or Japan, and art books. Examples are Justin Doolittle's 1865
"Social Life of the Chinese," John Davis's 1845 two-volume "The Chinese,"
and an 1897 ten-volume set "Oriental Ceramic Art." In addition, the
department houses several archival collections related to Methodist
missionaries to China. The most notable is the Sue Stanford Collection.
