Best Practices Workshop:
Recruiting and training faculty for taking students abroad

April 15-16, 2005
St. Olaf College
Northfield, Minnesota

This workshop helped equip faculty to lead long-term and short-term off-campus programs. It was designed for faculty members at Global Partners institutions who want to lead off-campus programs but lack experience, as well as for administrators responsible for recruiting faculty to become involved. Participants discussed the personal and professional rewards of leading off-campus programs, the challenges of working with providers, support available from off-campus studies officers, and nitty-gritty issues. It was led by Patrick Quade, Director of International and Off-Campus Study at St. Olaf College, and Milton Reigelman, Professor of English and Director of Study-Abroad Programs at Centre College.

Resources
St. Olaf College has prepared a rich selection of resources for faculty who take their students off-campus. They are available here as Word documents for downloading and use:

  • Disclosure statement: Medical issues are a major concern for faculty members getting ready to take students off-campus. Students use this form to disclose medical or other concerns about their participation in the program. (Some of this form involves disability issues. For disability-related resources, you can also see our page on disability issues.)
  • Group dynamics: Faculty members are often worried about how their group will along? Here are some suggestions for building and sustaining good relationships with and among your students.
  • Mentor program: Faculty members are often anxious about taking students off-campus if they haven't done it before. One way to help them get beyond their anxiety is to give them some experience. St. Olaf allows experienced faculty members to take along mentees on their programs. Here's a description.
  • Curricular planning for off-campus study: Running a course off-campus involves more than making hotel reservations. There are a complex variety of curricular issues involved, just like offering the course on-campus. This form addresses those concerns.
  • Safety: Faculty worry about safety issues, for good reason. Here's a statement of safety policy--for faculty, students, and parents.
  • Selection criteria: Which students should go on your off-campus program? Here is a set of criteria that you might find useful.

The schedule for the workshop is available here.
