Joe Troncale is an Associate Professor of Russian at the University of Richmond, where he has taught since 1979. He began his study of Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, in 1969, and received his M.A. in Russian Literature from the University of Arizona in 1974. He completed his Ph.D. in Russian Literature at Cornell University in 1979. At the University of Richmond, he teaches courses in the Russian language, Russian Literature, Russian Cinema, and in Russian painting. During his career, Dr. Troncale has received teaching awards from University of Arizona, the University of Richmond, and Virginia's State Council on Higher Education. Since his first visit in 1976 as a Foreign Service Officer with the US Department of State, his research interests in cinema and painting have taken him to many parts of the former Soviet Union and Russia. He has scholarly publications in both the US and in Russia. His experience in Russia includes working as the director of his university's summer program in St. Petersburg and in Moscow and as a guide for adult groups in Russia for over twenty years.
