Resources for Language Instruction
Less Commonly
Taught Languages (LCTLs)
As part of our work on incorporation of technology in language study, we began with an investigation of online resources for the four languages associated with the Global Partners Centers. We would eventually like to include online resources related to other less commonly taught languages (LCTLs).
Below are recommended on-line resources for the languages associated with the Global Partners Centers. If you have additional resources or links regarding these languages, or would like to add information regarding another LCTL, contact Associated Colleges of the South, phone: 404.636.9533.
- Essential
Czech offers key words and phrases with audio files.
- Little
Czech Primer in pictures offers instruction based on verb, noun
and adjective categories.
- Local
Lingo has a pronunciation guide, language lessons with audio, phrases
and idioms, and interactive quizzes.
- Yamada Language Center at the University of Oregon provides a web Language Guide for Czech.
Russian:
- Learnrussian.elanguageschool.net is intended as an effective online support for Russian language learners
worldwide.
- RussNet has online modules, folk tales and cultural maps.
Swahili:
- The
Kamusi Project: Internet Living Swahili Dictionaries. From the Yale
Program in African Languages.
- LangMedia:
The Five Colleges Foreign Language Media Archive.
Click on "Language by Country" and choose Swahili.
- National African Language Resource Center (NALRC) at the University
of Wisconsin develops resources for research, teaching, and learning
of a variety African languages.
- Yamada
Language Center at the University of Oregon offers
self-study language materials for Swahili language and culture.
Turkish:
- LangMedia:
The Five Colleges Foreign Language Media Archive.
Click on "Language by Country" and choose Turkish.
- Travellingwords.com provides one free downloadable chapter of instruction.
- Voice
of America provides streaming Turkish news programs.
- Yamada Language Center at the University of Oregon provides a web Language Guide for Turkish.
General Resources for Less Commonly Taught Languages:
- Less
Commonly Taught Languages Project tracks information on locations
in North America where students at all levels (elementary through college/university)
can study less commonly taught languages.
- National
Association of Self-Instructional Language Programs (NASILP). A
professional organization established to foster self-managed academic
programs in the less-commonly taught languages (LCTLs).
- National
Council of Organizations of Less Commonly Taught Languages (NCOLCTL).
Through its website called CouncilNet, NCOLCTL addresses communication
and information needs of its members and others interested in the teaching
of less commonly taught languages.
- TravLang's Foreign Language for Travelers. Includes basic information for over
70 languages.
- The
UCLA Language Materials Project Provides a searchable database
of teaching and learning materials for 100 less commonly taught languages.
